Castelsardo is a fortified mediaeval town (previously known as Castel Genovese) that, even today, after 900 years, succeeds in preserving its old-world charm. The trachyte promontory out at sea, home to the ancient Doria Castle, the powerful defensive walls and the Aragonese bell tower of the beautiful Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, help make this a uniquely magical environment. The town also offers a well-equipped and efficiently run tourist port, with moorings for around 800 boats. For lovers of all that the coast has to offer, Castelsardo really is the ideal destination. There is a multitude of sandy beaches (Marina, Lu Bagnu, Vignaccia, Baia Ostina) and cliffs (Pedraladda, Manganella and Punta la Craba). Wherever you go in this part of the world, you are sure to come across seductive marine colours inviting you to immerse yourself in the crystalline waters. During the summer season, Castelsardo plays host to numerous interesting cultural events and shows. At Easter and Christmas, too, the mediaeval town's central square comes alive with music and drama. The culmination of these celebrations comes at New Year, with the traditional firework display and concerts by highly-regarded performers. Traditions The most important and evocative of all the town's traditions are those linked with Holy Week. The Lunissanti is the most ancient representation of the Passion of Christ anywhere on the island, and has the effect of transporting those who witness it back in time. Craftsmanship The craftsmanship of Castelsardo's artisans is appreciated around the world thanks to their unusual approach to the working of dwarf palms. They use the leaves of these palms to produce truly unique baskets. Trips Castelsardo provides the ideal surroundings in which to experience unforgettable landscapes and seascapes on foot, on horseback or by bike. The area is rich in woodland, fragrant Mediterranean maquis, sheer cliffs and breathtaking scenery. The beauty of Castelsardo's sunsets is sure to make an indelible mark on all those who experience them. Cuisine Among the most celebrated local dishes are those based on fish and shellfish, such as the delicious fish soup, mullet, sea bass with Vernaccia white wine, roast squid, lobster and cray-fish, considered the most flavoursome on the island.
